The Womanforce at TWS!

The Current Role of Women at The Walkway School

Women are generally perceived as ‘primary caretakers’ in Pakistan. Contrary to the century-old perception of a woman’s role in the society, we believe that when women are empowered and given equal opportunities, the economies grow and prospects are enhanced for current and upcoming generations.

Fact Check: Woman Empowerment and TWS!

The current role of women at The Walkway School is indisputable. And, here are some facts to testify to our former statement:

  • The average female share of the workforce at the Walkway School is 65 percent.
  • TWS is Pakistan’s first street school which is driven and administered primarily by women.
  • Almost all leaders and department heads at The Walkway School are women.
  • The Walkway School is Pakistan’s first publicly-funded street school which is focused majorly on women education.

Moreover, The Walkway School has recently undergone many changes, including the women role in it. We are determined to redefine the meaning of equality and create awareness among the communities about women’s rights and feminism.

Moazzam S. Bukhari, the Former President and COO of TWS stepped down from his position as the President and handed it over to Mehrosh Shaikh – an extremely talented, self-motivated, and determined member of the school.

Commenting on the changes, the COO announced, “We deeply understand the current role of women in Pakistan and their contribution to the economy. However, masses still fail to understand and acknowledge the cruciality of the situation and the importance of women empowerment.”

We aim to educate society through actions and practices. Hence, we encourage women in our community to come forward and take such challenges”, he added.

Now that you have a clearer understanding of the position and the role of women at The Walkway School, let’s give you a little insight. In conversation with The Walkway School, these women talked about their inspiration, purpose, and goal, along with their relationship to Pakistan’s best street school:

The Walkway School might seem like an organisation to the outsiders, but it is a home and a safe heaven to me and many others who are somehow connected to us. The learners here are just like my children. I aim to support their growth and development and just like a mother, I expect nothing in return” –

President TWS Mehrosh Shaikh.

Knowing that the children at TWS are going to have a secure future makes me extremely happy and content about my role. As a finance officer, I aim to make this organisation self-sustainable so that we can expand our current capacity while facilitating and accommodating more underprivileged children in the future

Chief Financial Officer Rubaya Nizamani

Men, women, or children: everyone is equal at The Walkway School. You can measure this statement by the fact that even our president and founding members sit on the floor with children and take equal part in everyday operations. Not to mention, everyone is heard and involved in the decision-making process. The sky’s the limit for all of us

– Head Linkages & Liaison Hameeda Baloch

Before we sign-off, we would like to mention a few more things. The list of amazing women at The Walkway School is not definitive while we constantly witness a rise in the current number of women who are change seekers across all sectors. Living in a society that doesn’t approve of vocal and opinionated women, these individuals are the leaders of tomorrow, and they deserve our adoration.
